Yoga developed over 5,000 years ago in India. The poses (asanas) exercise every part of the body and the breathing techniques (pranayamas) help with stress management, increase energy and self-awareness. Meditation helps quiet the mind. During a yoga class one does a series of poses that work the muscles, joints, spine, and internal organs. The poses help strengthen the muscles and bones, improve circulation and digestion, and increase flexibility. Bends and twists, for example, massage the internal organs, aid digestion and increase the elasticity of the spine and joints.
